A planning application seeking the retention of a local meteorological mast that is eighty metres tall has been granted conditionally by Kilkenny County Council.

The applicant, Manogate Limited, applied for continued use of the mast at Ballyfasy Upper, Ballyfasy, County Kilkenny.

The structure is presently fixed to ground mounted anchors by wires and includes associated instruments to measure local meteorological conditions.

Retention permission had been sought for a period of five years.

The decision to grant permission, subject to five conditions, was made on October 2, 2023.

One of the conditions was that 'the developer shall ascertain the requirements of the Irish Aviation Authority in respect of the need for any red obstacle light to be fitted to the mast'.

At eighty metres tall, the mast is taller than the Republic of Ireland's current tallest building, Capital Dock in Dublin (79m).
