New plans seeking to develop a solar farm at Kilderry in County Kilkenny have generated backlash in the local community, and a huge amount of submissions have been lodged against the proposal.
For many locals, this latest proposal is a step too far as plans for multiple other energy projects continue to advance in the region.
For example, planning permission was recently granted to develop a solar farm in nearby Brownstown (since appealed to An Bord Pleanála) and an application is expected soon to develop a large wind farm in nearby Freneystown.
Local resident, Stephen Keogh, based near Castlewarren, is amongst those to express his dismay.
“We support renewable energy, but it needs to be planned carefully, with full community engagement, and in a way that respects our concerns,” he said.
“Most households only found out about the development (Kilderry) when site notices appeared along the roadside.
“While transitioning to renewable energy sources is crucial for addressing climate change, it should not come at the expense of local communities.”
The fate of the Kilderry Solar Farm project now rests in the hands of Kilkenny County Council, which will consider the objections, consult with relevant authorities, and conduct a thorough review before making a final decision.
