Permission granted to convert ex-Argos unit in Kilkenny

The ex-Argos branch on High Street in Kilkenny City

LHM Properties Holdings Limited have been granted planning permission to convert the inside of the ex-Argos unit on High Street in Kilkenny City into a convenience retailer with ancillary alcohol sales.

This unit is set to become a Tesco Express Store according to Mayor of Kilkenny, Cllr Joe Malone, who has been engaged in recent talks with Tesco representatives.

The intended layout of the unit is to be a convenience store with an ancillary alcohol sales area (measuring 48.8 sq.m), with a second and much smaller alcohol sales area measuring c. 1 sq.m located behind the check-out area.

The floor area proposed for the display and sale of alcohol will remain subsidiary to the use of the retail unit which relates to the sale of convenience goods.

In addition, permission was sought for replacement shopfront signage on the High Street elevation, replacing the former Argos fascia and projection sign. A limited area of plant is also required to serve the unit, and this is to be located at first floor level.

Kilkenny County Council granted planning permission to the proposal, subject to two conditions, on November 13, 2023.
