A significant milestone was celebrated at the dialysis unit of University Hospital Waterford (UHW) recently as it marked 40 years of providing dialysis services to people from Kilkenny and the wider South East.
The Waterford Branch of the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) organised a gathering for staff, both past and present along with a special event for patients on December 11 and December 12.
Currently, over 108 patients from Kilkenny, Waterford and surrounding counties are cared for in the UHW unit, while a further 45 patients engage in home dialysis with support from the Renal Therapies Unit.
The celebrations included a presentation of a hamper to Nora Delahunty, who was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the hospital for over 40 years.
Other special guests included Bob Murphy, the fifth patient in the unit in 1983, accompanied by his mother, Síle Murphy. Bob's late father, Seán Murphy, played a pivotal role in advocating for the unit in 1981.
A special renal-friendly cake and a free raffle also took place.
Ray Halligan, Chairperson Waterford Branch IKA, thanking organiser, Frances Moynihan, ably assisted by her husband Joe for making the occasion a reality and extended his appreciation to the staff for the 'wonderful care' they give to patients.
The event was made possible due to the support of Kilkenny, Wexford and Tipperary branches of IKA working with the host county branch in Waterford.
