The city bus service served more than 300,000 passengers in 2023, according to Kilkenny County Council.

“The wheels on the bus go round and round, and they have gone round and round for more than 300,000 of you this year," they said in a recent statement.

According to city councillor Maria Dollard (Green Party), the news proves that local citizens are embracing greener modes of transport.

“The city bus service is proving that the public in Kilkenny are more than willing to make the switch to using public transport if they have options that are cheaper and more convenient,” she said.

“I believe we need more routes and more frequency to get even more people to use the bus.

“Some estates and areas in Kilkenny don’t have access to this service and that has got to change.”

Cllr Dollard has also made the call for ‘smaller, more frequent electric buses’.

Routes KK1 and KK2 are operated by City Direct, as part of the Transport for Ireland public transport network.

The two-route city network consists of 64 stops and is fully funded by the National Transport Authority.
