Update issued on Kilkenny shopping centre

South Kilkenny councillors were briefed on the issue at the July meeting of Piltown Municipal District

Latest update issued on reopening plans for Kilkenny shopping centre

Ferrybank Shopping Centre

Dunnes Stores are actively engaging with Kilkenny County Council in relation to Ferrybank Shopping Centre but an official opening date has not yet been confirmed.

That was the latest update relayed to elected members of Piltown Municipal District at their monthly meeting, held earlier today (Wednesday) in Ferrybank Library.

"Dunnes have undertaken to engage with the Ferrybank Local Area Plan," said Kilkenny County Council Director of Services, Denis Malone, who also confirmed that a recent meeting between the local authority and the supermarket giant was fruitful.

"We didn’t get an opening date, but they are now in a process of engagement."

Cllr Ger Frisby, Cathaoirleach of Piltown MD, described the update as 'a start'.

"Our next chance to go back to them is when the draft [for the Ferrybank Local Area Plan] comes out," he said.

Cllr Tomás Breathnach also welcomed the update, stating that 'my standard of a successful meeting is to meet again'.

He then asked: "Are they [Dunnes] aware about the retail strategy [joint retail strategy between Kilkenny and Waterford] and where is that now?"

"People won’t realise scale of the building that’s in there," he said.
