Gardaí have warned the drivers of large vehicles (weighing more than 3.5 tonnes) to avoid using Newpark Drive in Kilkenny City as a 'rat run'.

A 'rat run' is typically a minor street used by drivers during peak periods to avoid congestion on main roads.

"A notice to all vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 tonnes that Newpark Drive is access only for deliveries and collections on same," a garda spokesperson said.

"We have received several complaints from residents growing impatient with the amount of large vehicles using this as a 'rat run'.

"Warnings were issued today to a dozen vehicles over a 30 minute period. Future breaking of the prohibition is likely to incur fixed charge penalties of 60 euros. One of our lads spoke to residents today, all of whom share the same frustration."
