Kilkenny Gardaí issue significant warning to drivers

An Garda Síochana in Kilkenny have warned local drivers about the importance having their tyres road worthy as part of Road Safety Week.

"The majority of us will have many pairs of shoes. Some amongst us, not the author, will happily spend 200 Euro on a pair of runners. Regardless they're a necessary expense," Kilkenny Gardaí posted to social media.

"Tyres are a bit like shoes and in fact the average car has the equivalent of four size eight shoes contacting it with the road at any one time. When you think of 1,500kg braking, accelerating, steering all with such a tiny contact," the post added.

"You'd think then that we'd ensure this tiny contact would not be ignored and you'd be wrong.

"Today our crew are out with the RSA doing checkpoints and have already made numerous detections," the post continued.

"The penalty for non compliance may be only a fine and penalty points but it could be much worse.

"Inquests after fatal collisions regularly feature degraded and worn tyres as a major factor. New Shoes anybody?," the Garda spokesperson concluded.
