Several water schemes across County Kilkenny are to receive a welcome boost with a financial investment in safety and supply improvement works worth €898,363 confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.
The funding was announced by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, and is part of funding approval for more than 250 individual projects across the country under a new cycle of the Multi-annual Rural Water Programme which runs until 2026, providing capital investment to improve water services in rural areas.
Welcoming the investment, local Fine Gael TD, John-Paul Phelan claimed the financial injection would address supply and safety concerns in many parts of Kilkenny.
"This is a welcome and timely boost for these communities. We all depend on a safe and available water supply, for homes, for businesses, for our communities. This is very good news for parts of Kilkenny which have struggled with supply issues over the years," he said.
"Earlier this year, the local authorities were invited to work with group water schemes and their representative body, the National Federation of Group Water Schemes, to submit applications for funding for individual capital projects," Mr Phelan added.
"Following the completion of an assessment process which included a critical evaluation of the applications received by an independent Expert Panel, the Minister has approved funding of some €47.1 million for 256 individual capital projects across the country. I’m delighted to see several priority Kilkenny schemes included," the local TD concluded.
Announcing investment under the new Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme, Minister O’Brien commented: "I am very conscious of the need to protect our water sources and ensure the highest standards in water treatment. I also want to ensure that our rural communities have the benefit of high quality infrastructure and water services. I have no doubt that the investment I announced today will help improve these water services which will continue to support and encourage people to live and work locally in rural Ireland."
