A number of smaller road projects will be tackled in the Callan Thomastown district this year.

Funding of €178,499 has been allocated to Community Involvement Schemes across the district.

However, based on the current waiting list for this scheme, Area Engineer Declan Murphy said just three schemes will be accepted for works this year.

The CIS scheme encourages a joint approach between the local authority and groups of residents and landowners for the restoration of public roads.
increase

Cllr Joe Lyons said it was good to see an overall increase “however small” in CIS funding allocations. It is ‘slightly’ more than last year.

However, Cllr Deirdre Cullen lamented that “the list is getting longer and longer.”
She said applicants feel they are on the list “forever and a day with no end in sight.” Progress on the list is moving at “a snail’s pace,” she added.

Criteria
Mr Murphy said the allocations are determined on a first-come, first-served basis.
He said it might be time to look at the criteria for choosing projects on the list to ensure they are getting the best value for money.

Criteria is not specified by the Department of Transport but by the council, he said.
Some jobs are bigger than others, he went on to say, and €178,000 isn’t a lot of money when it comes to roads.
They could ‘spend that in a day.’
