Letter to the Editor: 'Sad to see businesses in Kilkenny close'

Dear Editor,

My name is Orla Donohoe and I ran for the General Elections with the Irish Freedom Party (I’m no longer with them).

I just wanted to reach out as during elections I started to promote local businesses and have carried on since then.

It’s nice to put out a positive message. I just want to say how sad it is to see two businesses in Kilkenny close in the space of a few weeks — both cafés.

More needs to be done. I’ve spoken to many businesses in both Kilkenny and Carlow to try and promote the ‘shop local’ and “support small businesses” message.

What are the local councillors and TDs doing to help?

Why is more not being done to bring down the VAT rate, rents and council rates they seem to be the biggest contention when I spoke to business owners?

It’s so sad to think there are more people losing their jobs as well, especially in the cost-of-living crisis we are in.
