The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, announced the launch of the next call for expressions of interest to developers under the Croí Cónaithe Cities Scheme this week, but Kilkenny will not see any increase in apartment building as a result.
The scheme is a fund which aims to support the building of apartments for sale to owner-occupiers by bridging the gap between the construction cost and market value where the cost of building is greater.
However, this incentive will not be available to developers in Kilkenny as the scheme only operates in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford cities.
This comes as figures released in the GeoDirectory Residential Buildings Report earlier this year showed that Kilkenny had just 2.6% of its total residential stock as apartments in Q4 of 2024, making it one of the lowest-percentage counties in the country.
Contracts have been signed to deliver 1,083 apartments with applications submitted for a further 1,600, but it is unclear whether the Croí Cónaithe Cities Scheme will ever be extended to Kilkenny.
