Priest retirements and parish swaps to come into place in Kilkenny this week

A number of priests in the Diocese of Ossory in County Kilkenny are preparing for a new chapter in their lives, beginning from next weekend.

Last month, the Bishop of Ossory, Niall Coll confirmed a number of changes and retirements within the Diocese meaning many Kilkenny parishes will be bidding farewell to former parish priests and welcoming new ones.

The alterations reflect a broader national trend of adjusting to a changing landscape of parish structures and clergy numbers. These changes often involve priests taking on new roles, including assistant priest positions, moderator roles in pastoral combinations, and chaplaincies.

In the city, Fr Jim Murphy will retire in the coming days after 21 years in St Canice's Parish. Outgoing Clara Parish Priest Fr Willie Purcell will take up the mantle later this week.

Meanwhile, further south in the county, Fr Liam Barron will retire from the Mullinavat Parish and he will be replaced by Fr Sean O'Connor.

It's also the end of an era in Thomastown as Fr Daniel Bollard retires, with the position being taken up by Fr Francis Purcell.
