Kilkenny County Council voted 18-3 against nominating a presidential candidate at a special meeting on Monday afternoon.

Cllrs Eugene McGuinness (Ind), Maurice Shorthall (Ind) and Tomás Breathnach (Lab) were the only elected members to vote in favour of endorsing a candidate.

Twelve hopefuls spoke in the Council chamber but were unable to sway enough support to their causes.
