Calls to put reckless Kilkenny contractors on 'naughty list' as local anger grows

Councillors in the Castlecomer Municipal District have condemned the 'unacceptable behaviour' of some contractors employed to carry out local works by Kilkenny County Council.

The matter was raised by Cllr Michael McCarthy at November’s monthly meeting as he outlined the public discontent in the Lisdowney area following months of ESB Grid Connection works which has led to local disruptions.

Cllr McCarthy believes there are "serious concerns over the quality of work," adding, "people have been prevented from gaining access to their own private homes."

"The inconvenience and lack of communication has been alarming as has some of the reinstatement work," he continued.

"At times when excavation work took place, people had no access for vehicles into their homes for days on end.

"This behaviour and disregard for people going about their daily business is not acceptable and the people of the locality deserve far better," he commented, requesting no more licenses are issued by the local authority until such time as the area engineer is satisfied the quality of any future works will improve.

Similar sentiments were expressed by his fellow North Kilkenny councillors.

Cllr Michael Delaney said communication was 'completely lacking', while Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh described it as 'appalling'.

Meanwhile, Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick accused some contractors of doing a 'shoddy' job and suggested a 'naughty list' be written.

A council spokesperson said they had met with the contractors and put a 'strong emphasis on communication' going forward.
