Funding of €10 million has been allocated for the delivery of a new fire station headquarters in Kilkenny City.
The funding forms part of the €328.5 million Fire Services Capital Programme (2026–2030), the largest ever investment in fire and emergency services in the history of the State.
In addition, two new Class B fire appliances which cost €500,000 each have been allocated to Kilkenny County Council under the plan for fire services nationwide.

Carlow-Kilkenny TD, Peter 'Chap' Cleere, stated that the announcment "represents a major investment in frontline emergency services across both counties and will significantly enhance local response capacity."
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD, who announced the funding, remarked that "investment in the fire service will reinforce public safety in Kilkenny and ensure that our critical infrastructure and essential services are protected."
The need for a new fire station has been a top priority for years as the current fire station, situated on Goal Road in Kilkenny City, has become increasingly inadequate to meet the demands of a growing population and modern firefighting requirements.
The restricted space and tight quarters have hampered essential upgrades and expansions, making it clear that a new location is necessary.
Back in 2023, it was reported by Kilkenny Live that then-vice chairperson of the council John Coonan identified the location for new station as a three acre site located just off the Ring Road in the vicinity of the Kilkenny Business and Retail Park.

Leas-Cheann Comhairle and TD for Carlow-Kilkenny, John McGuinness, noted that "the current fire station on Gaol Road has served the city well, but it is no longer fit for the demands of a modern emergency service."
"This new, purpose-built headquarters will ensure our fire and rescue personnel have the facilities, equipment and space they need to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies," he said.
"I will be working closely with the council and relevant authorities to ensure this project moves swiftly through the remaining stages. This is a necessary and long-overdue investment, and I look forward to seeing construction begin as soon as possible."

The project, being advanced by Kilkenny County Council, will see a modern fire station designed by HLM Architects, who were appointed in early 2024.
In neighbouring Carlow, €2.8 million has been allocated for the refurbishment and upgrade of Bagenalstown Fire Station.
