A dog found roaming the Kilkenny countryside in sub-zero temperatures was recently rescued by concerned locals.

In a post on social media, Lawcus Farm Guesthouse in Stoneyford described how they encountered the animal.

"Yesterday (now last Thursday) evening we spotted this little furry sitting, freezing, hungry at a junction waiting for its owner," they said.

"An hour later on our way home, we passed the junction & this little furry was still sitting waiting patiently for its owner to return. We parked the car and as we approached him he went for cover under the the farm gate and joined 3 cows.

"They seemed to accept him and mother him and as they walked off, the dog followed them. We went home and Mark made up a dog feed and returned in the dark to find the dog was gone. It's now -4.

"Mark, Having entered the field with his torch saw the cows eyes shining and then low and behold amongst their legs were a little pair of red eyes. Mark approached them and managed to coax the dog within 10ft with food, so that was it for last night.

"He played on our minds over the night. This morning (now last Friday) in the thick white frost Mark returned to the spot with fresh food, water and a prayer on a lead.

"On arrival the cows had been moved, no sign of dog. But walking the hedge and calling a little face appeared and after talking and gaining some trust coaxed him to the fence, where he lay down petrified.

"Mark skipped through the fence and lay beside him, while stroking and calmly talking to it was able to attach a collar and then the lead and carry him back through the fence and into the truck and now he is sleeping in a big bed of straw with a full belly.

"What a beautiful animal."

The guesthouse have named the animal Poppy and she is settling in well now, slowly gaining trust in the new humans looking after her over the last few days.

She is being taken to the vet today for a check-up.
