Big boost in year-on-year electric vehicle sales in Kilkenny

Electric vehicle sales in Kilkenny are nearly 50% higher for the first seven months of this year (251 units) compared to the same period last year (170 units).

That's according to The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), who today released their official 232 new vehicle registrations statistics for July.

Total car registrations in Kilkenny are up nearly 10% for the same period, rising from 1648 units sold in the first seven months of 2022 compared to 1797 units sold in the first seven months of 2023.

Despite this comparative growth, the overall car sales increase for Kilkenny is still well below the national average of 20%.

Nationally, in July, the car market share grew, with petrol vehicles retaining the largest share at 32.29%.

Diesel accounts for 22.06%, hybrid (18.04%), electric (17.64%), and plug-in electric hybrid (7.67%).

A surge in battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hybrids now sees their combined national market share (year to date) at 43.35%.
