Speed limits across Kilkenny set to drop after council review

Speed limits in eight north Kilkenny housing estates are set to be officially reduced to 30 kilometres per hour, following an extensive review of speed limits across the county.

The residential areas are in Paulstown and include An Choill Rua, Whitelawns, Oak Lawns, Marble Court, Cluain na Sagart, The Paddocks, St Enda’s Terrace and The Village Green.
The Prince Road in Castlecomer and a stretch of the LS6655 through Johnswell has also been proposed for a reduced speed limit of 30kph.

A number of other north Kilkenny roads will see a reduction in speed limits to 50kph or 60kph, including in Freshford, Johnstown and Paulstown.
The proposals have been welcomed by Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick.

As part of the process, in Kilkenny, public consultation was held last year, with proposals and maps available to the public. During that process Kilkenny County Council received 64 submissions on roads in all parts of the county. 41 submissions were made online, with 23 by post or email.

The speed limit review is carried out by Kilkenny County Council every five years. Proposed changes to the bylaws are consistent with guidelines drawn up in accordance with the Road Traffic Act and constitute a direction of the Minister for Transport.

The final proposals are currently being examined by municipal district councillors and are expected to be adopted at the October meeting of Kilkenny County Council.
