Pictures: Volkswagen owners turn out in force as Laharts Kilkenny hosts special VW 75th anniversary day

Seventy-five years ago, the first Volkswagen ever assembled outside of Germany was built in Ireland

Volkswagen are blessed not only to have a great history in Ireland but also the loveliest community of passionate owners.

Seventy-five years ago, the first Volkswagen ever assembled outside of Germany was built on the Shelbourne Road in Ballsbridge, Dublin. That car was an almond-green Beetle, known today as the iconic ‘Ballsbridge Beetle’. It now resides in a museum!

To mark VW’s 75th birthday, at the weekend, Laharts hosted a special party, with a number of drivers making the trip to ensure the legacy is kept going. There were prizes for best turned out car, German-style refreshments, and lots more.

“We were very happy that so many people, so many classic Volkswagen owners turned out to show off their cars, and show the great legacy of Volkswagen in the local area,” said Marcus O’Connor, Laharts.
