Murder probe after human remains identified as missing man Kieran Quilligan

Gardai have launched a murder investigation after human remains found in Co Cork were identified as missing man Kieran Quilligan.

The 47-year-old was reported missing from Cork city centre on September 1 last year.

The remains were found in Rostellan on Monday.

A post-mortem examination was carried out and the remains have been formally identified as Mr Quilligan.

Gardai said the missing person investigation had been upgraded to a murder probe.

It is being led by a senior investigation officer from Bridewell Garda Station in Cork.

Gardai have not disclosed information in relation to the cause of death.

After he went missing the Garda said it was very concerned for the safety of Mr Quilligan.

It was reported that he had left premises in Andersons Quay at about 8.30pm on September 1 in the company of another male.

Gardai carried out extensive CCTV inquiries that tracked his last known movements through Cork city centre, from Andersons Quay towards Sullivan’s Quay and on to Proby’s Quay.

His last known movement was entering St Finbarr’s Place, off Proby’s Quay.

When last seen he was wearing a black baseball hat, orange T-shirt, blue zip-up hooded jacket, blue Under Armour tracksuit trousers and black Nike running shoes.

Mr Quilligan had a large tattoo on the side of his head.

Gardai have appealed to anyone who has any information on the murder of Mr Quilligan to contact Bridewell Garda Station.
