Funeral arrangements made for Donegal man who was found dead in Portuguese police cell

The funeral of Ryan Chan, the Letterkenny man found dead in a Portuguese jail cell, will take place on Monday.

The 29-year-old was found unresponsive by police on September 11 in the Albufeira area.

Mr Chan, who travelled to the coastal resort to attend a wedding, had been arrested in connection with an alleged knife attack on a woman, also aged in her 20s. The woman has since been discharged from hospital.

The following morning, Mr Chan was found dead. Local reports in Portugal said that foul play is not suspected.

Mr Chan's remains were repatriated back to Ireland with the assistance of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

His funeral Mass will take place at the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine, Letterkenny on Monday at 11am with interment afterwards in Conwal cemetery.

His death being investigated by Judiciary Police, the Prosecutor's Office and Inspection-General of Internal Administration (IGAI).

The Department of Foreign Affairs provided consular assistance to the family of Mr Chan, but told Donegal Live that it “does not comment on the detail of individual cases."

His funeral notice reads:

The death has taken place on 11th September 2024 of Ryan Chan, Letterkenny. Deeply missed by his loving partner Megan and their children Ezra and Eli, mother Frances, father Bobby and his wife Yvonne, brother Connor, grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours.

Ryan’s remains will be reposing at his mother Frances’ home at 4 Kiltoy Court, Letterkenny, F92 C8DP, on Saturday 21st September from 4pm until 10pm and on Sunday 22nd September from 12 noon until 10pm with Rosary both nights at 9pm.

Funeral from there on Monday 23rd September at 10.15am going to the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine, Letterkenny for 11am Requiem Mass which can be viewed onhttps://www.youtube.com/@churchoftheirishmartyrs4657.

Interment afterwards in Conwal cemetery. Family time on the morning of the funeral please.
