No end in sight to housing crisis as 15,500 people now facing homelessness in Ireland
In a report published on Friday, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has revealed that 15,580 individuals across the country accessed emergency accommodation in the month of April.
The Monthly Homeless Report for April 2025 has shown that the dependence on emergency accommodation across the country continues to increase amid the ongoing housing crisis.
Among the startling figures of adults seeking emergency help are thousands of children and families. Over 4,775 children made up the total number of those accessing emergency accommodation in Ireland, with 3,559 children in emergency accommodation in just Dublin alone.
There are 2,245 families in emergency accommodation, 58% of these families are single parent families. Again, the region with the highest figures is Dublin with 1,565.

Other notable regions with high numbers of children accessing emergency accommodation include the Mid-East which includes Kildare, Meath and Wicklow with 219 children, the Mid-West which includes Limerick and Clare with 225, and the West which includes Galway, Mayo and Roscommon with 230.
Alongside Dublin, these areas also see the highest overall figures of homelessness as well as the South-West which includes Cork and Kerry.
When it comes to the demographic of homeless people, it appears that men are most likely to find themselves in need of emergency accommodation. According to this report, 61% of adults in emergency accommodation in April were men while 39% were women.
As well as this, over 53% of adults who are in emergency accommodation are in the 25-44 age bracket. This equates to 5,741 people or around one-third of the overall figure of homeless individuals in the country.
According to the report, over 7,393 of those in emergency accommodation in Ireland are in Private Emergency Accommodation which includes hotels, B&Bs and other facilities.
Meanwhile, 3,305 are in Supported Temporary Accommodation which includes family hubs and hostels. Then there's Temporary Emergency Accommodation which has minimal or no support. This report states that 133 individuals are availing of this.
