Condolences have been expressed for Carlow woman Martha Nolan, who died tragically in New York last week.

A death notice, published on Rip.ie, reads: “Martha Nolan of Monacurragh, Carlow and the Upper East Side, Manhattan, New York, passed away unexpectedly.

“Beloved daughter of Elma, much loved sister of Jacqui, treasured granddaughter of Betty and Liam, cherished niece of John, Michelle, Barry and Mona and adored partner of Nick.

“She will be sadly missed by her loving mother and her mother's partner Patrick, sister, aunts, uncles, partner, her father Seamus, grandparents, extended family, relatives and her large circle of friends in Ireland and the U.S.”

The local community has expressed its deep grief at Martha’s passing. The beautiful young woman was found dead at a boat club in Mountauk on August 5, located in the Hamptons. Her cause of death is still unknown.

One mourner wrote on RIP.ie: “I have fond memories of Martha as a child coming into our shop with her Granny Betty. She was always a happy, confident, outgoing, loving child.”

A man who went to college with Nolan wrote: “I had the pleasure of knowing her during our time in UCD and I always remember her kindness and wonderful personality with fondness.”

A number of condolences sign off as fellow mothers, with one reading: “Beautiful girl who seemed to have achieved so much in her short time on this earth. Condolences to all Martha's family and friends at this heart-breaking time. Taken way before her time, may she rest in peace”.

Colleagues of Martha’s mother at Scoil Chonglais in Wicklow have also expressed their solidarity and sympathy with Elma, saying that she “is a stalwart of the classroom” and that “the students adore her”.

“That she has lost one [of] her best friends - when she's not talking about Jacqui - makes it all the more unspeakable.”

The funeral arrangements for Martha Nolan have yet to be announced.
