'SOS- we have been attacked'- Panic as Irish citizens on aid boat struck by drones

'SOS- we have been attacked'

A boat carrying Irish citizens and humanitarian aid to Gaza has been struck by drones as the passengers call for help from the Irish public and government.

Irish political figure Chris Andrews on board the boat, called the Spectre, has called on the Irish government to send help their way via social media.

Comments have flooded in from concerned and worried people who have called and emailed the Department of Foreign Affairs urging them to send help.

In a social media post on Instagram, Chris Andrews shared a video of himself on the boat pleading for help.

He said: "The boat I am on called the Spectre was attacked by 4 drones. We are a peaceful non violent flotilla bringing aid to Gaza.

"Please call and email the Department of Foreign Affairs and request protection for the Irish Citizens. We have been attacked by two drones just now.

"The flotilla is experiencing multiple drones, unidentified objects dropped, communications being jammed, and explosions heard from a number of boats. We need all eyes on the flotilla now!".

In another post by the Sinn Fein Senator, Chris Andrews said: "The Irish government should be sending an observer boat...to ensure the safety of all Irish citizens...it has failed to do that so far....there is still time....the government have failed on so many levels."

Countless comments from Irish people have came in under the post confirming they have reached out to government bodies urging them to send help.

One person said: "Emails sent; however calls to DFA keep getting cut off. Will keep trying…. Stay strong".

Another person said: "No answer from that number but I’ll keep trying . Emails sent. God bless and stay strong."

In a statement published on September 24, The Tanaiste Simon Harris said: "I am extremely concerned by developments involving the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) and have been kept updated overnight. The welfare and safety of people aboard that flotilla has to be a priority of the international community.

2My officials are in direct contact with a designated Government point of contact for the Global Movement To Gaza delegation of the GSF. Our clear priority is to ensure the welfare of our citizens. My Department will provide consular assistance to any Irish citizens affected.

"What has happened is clearly not acceptable. It is clear what international law allows and does not allow, and it is clearly a breach of international law to have any activity that is targeting civilians or a humanitarian flotilla.

"This morning in New York, I have spoken directly with the EU’s High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas and to EU counterparts about collectively raising our concerns in Tel Aviv and considering what can be done to ensure the safety and well-being of all those on board the flotilla.

"I also intend to raise the matter publicly in my intervention at the United Nations during the Global Alliance for Implementation of the Two-State Solution meeting".
