Take every day as it comes and take nothing too seriously,” is the simple and wise advice offered by this year's Kilkenny Carer of the Year, Owen O'Neill.
The 56-year-old lives with his wife Phyllis, who has a spinal tumour, in Fr Murphy Square and cares for her.
“She has been through a lot medically and physically and she keeps going. She is a wonderful person,” he said. The couple are 25 years married and enjoy great banter and humour.
Outreach manager with Family Carers Ireland congratulated Owen on being named the Kilkenny Carer of the Year.
“This is a way of highlighting the work that people do out of love in their homes every day. Owen will represent family carers in Kilkenny for the next year.”
Owen, who has lived with Parkinson's for the past eight years, humbly accepted the award and pointed out that himself and Phyllis 'take care of each other'.
“We take care of each other and take every day as it comes.”
Anyone looking for indetails or support can contact the Kilkenny branch of the Family Carers of Ireland on 056-77721424. There are over 4,000 family carers in Kilkenny.
