The All-Party Oireachtas Group on Dementia, chaired by Senator Fiona O'Loughlin, hosted its annual Alzheimer's Tea Day event at Leinster House last week. This event highlights the importance of raising awareness and support for the 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland and their families.
Formed in 2016, the All-Party Oireachtas Group on Dementia serves as a vital platform for discussion and advocacy within the Oireachtas. Its mission is to foster understanding, build cross-party consensus, and champion long-term planning and resources for those living with dementia and their family carers.
Senator Fiona O’Loughlin, the Chair of the Group, commented, “I was delighted to invite Oireachtas members to join us for a special Tea Day today in Leinster House-a morning where we could all come together in support, solidarity and shared understanding of the challenges facing those who live with dementia, and their families.
"Tea Day events such as this morning not only raise vital funds, but also build awareness and connection for those living with dementia. As Chair of the all-party dementia group, part of my commitment is to help, with my colleagues, move towards a compassionate, informed and inclusive society.”
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Head of Advocacy, Research and Public Affairs, Cormac Cahill said: “We are very grateful to Senator Fiona O’Loughlin for hosting an Alzheimer’s Tea Day in Leinster House today.
"Alzheimer’s Tea Day is the longest-standing community-led fundraiser and a cornerstone of our fundraising, public awareness and advocacy work. Funds raised enable us to champion the rights of people living with dementia and their family carers and expand our vital dementia supports such as our Helpline, Alzheimer Cafes and Supports Groups.
“More than 64,000 people in Ireland live with dementia today—a number projected to reach 150,000 by 2045 and impacts every community in Ireland. For this reason, it’s vitally important to speak with members of the Oireachtas today as we work together to create a dementia-inclusive Ireland.
“Today was a great opportunity for members of Oireachtas to speak with advocates living with dementia, family carers, and members of our research community, to meet with ASI board and staff from across the country to discuss local dementia-related issues and to learn more about The All-Party Oireachtas Group on Dementia.”
Alzheimer’s Tea Day brings communities together across Ireland to support The Alzheimer Society of Ireland's vital work,
providing much-needed resources and services for the 64,000 individuals living with dementia and their families nationwide.
With the number of people diagnosed with dementia expected to double in the next 20 years, the need for support has never been greater.
People can still register at www.teaday.ie to receive a free organiser's toolkit with everything you need to host your own Tea Day event during the month of May.
Funds raised through Alzheimer's Tea Day support critical services like the Alzheimer's National Helpline, Daycare programs, home care, family carer training, social clubs, and Alzheimer's cafes. Every contribution makes a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by dementia.
