Tributes to 'charitable and generous' Dansy Walsh - Kilkenny Live

Tributes to 'charitable and generous' Dansy Walsh of Castlecomer, County Kilkenny

Daniel 'Dansy' Walsh

Kilkenny Street has lost its most senior and respected man with the death of Dansy Walsh at St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny.

Like father like son, Dansy took after his late father John serving his apprenticeship to the man we all referred to as “The Barber”.

He emigrated to England and with the late George Williams joined the RAF. His next port of call was New York, where he joined the US Air Force serving as a barber.

He soon acquired his own premises in the Bronx and became synonymous and famous for sourcing toupees worldwide.

He was very happy to return home when he retired to Kilkenny Street to live with his late sister Kathleen. Next began a new chapter in his life of just over 95 years - working from his home he specialised in picture framing.

There are many examples of his fine work in particular in the day room of Castlecomer District Hospital.

He was charitable and generous to so many, always carried out with the utmost discretion. A lifelong member of the PTAA, his wit and sense of humour were legendary.

A US citizen, the playing of the America the Beautiful was a fitting finale to a life well lived.

Burial was in the Parish Cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception by Monsignor Michael Ryan, PP Castlecomer assisted by Fr Ian Doyle, Kiltown.

Dansy will be sadly missed by his sisters Molly (Scotland), Lalo (New York), Bea (UK); brother Sean (London); nieces and nephews Kevin, Moira, Keiran, Imelda, Joe, Deidre, John, Anne, Mike Jim, Mary, Tracey, Kathrine, Michael, John and Rachel; extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
