Kilkenny village to benefit from newly adopted Mobility Management Plan

Kilkenny village to benefit from newly adopted Mobility Management Plan

The Square, Freshford, County Kilkenny

The Freshford Mobility Management Plan has been adopted following the most recent sitting of elected members of the Castlecomer Municipal District.

The plan sets out aims to improve the quality of the existing network in the village to increase permeability and connectivity.

This will in-turn enable access, including pedestrian, cycle and vehicular to key land uses such as community facilities including schools and sports clubs, new and existing development lands along with the core village centre.

The plan also focuses on relieving traffic congestion and providing a safer and more attractive environment for walking and cycling.

In total, 31 individual projects/initiatives were identified and subsequently recommended for implementation during the lifetime of the Mobility Management Plan.

The actual delivery of the measures will be dependent on the availability of funding to Kilkenny County Council however there would be no disadvantage to bringing forward delivery of the medium or long-term measures should funding become available.

Proposing the plan at this month's district council meeting was Cllr Michael McCarthy, who also proposed one specific amendment to the plan.

"Having consulted with local gardaí, clubs, organisations and Prague House, the change of traffic flow on L5003 and L5002 is not appropriate in the short term," he said.

"In particular I wish to highlight that problems at school times and during GAA matches would pose a danger and actually be an impediment to mobility."

Included in the plans is the provision of thirteen pedestrian crossings including at the Johnstown Road, chemist, Boherglass and in the vicinity of The Square.

The widening of the footpath on the Johnstown Road is also a big measure, as the road has been described as dangerous for pedestrians in recent times.

As Freshford continues to grow, it is hoped that all the measures proposed will help facilitate that growth and benefit the entire community going forward.
