Success! Kilkenny family of torpedoed World War I sailor found

Genealogist from New Zealand issued an appeal via the Kilkenny People / Kilkenny Live

Denis Patrick Owens

Sailor Denis Patrick Owens was from Castlecomer

A Kilkenny response to an appeal from the far side of the world could see the World War I memorabilia of a local man returned to the county.

Sailor Denis Owens, from Castlecomer, died in June 1918 when his ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Sicily.

Denis’s wife emigrated to New Zealand, from where a genealogist recently contacted the Kilkenny People.

The granddaughter of Denis’s wife has now died and her family have a memorial plaque and a sympathy card sent signed by King George V, sent after Denis’s death. They were searching for Denis’s family to send ‘home’ these artifacts.

We had success! The son of Denis’s brother has now made contact with the genealogist. We hope to report the arrival of the items in the future.
