Senator Patricia Stephenson has warned that the people of rural Kilkenny are facing a serious transport crisis as a result of JJ Kavanagh & Sons' plans to change its 717 from Clonmel to Dublin airport service.

The private bus operator announced yesterday it is making route adjustments and cutting out stops, notably in Castlecomer and Crettyard, which is going to impact commuters, students, and travellers. With no public transport alternative in place, Senator Stephenson says this move will leave many residents without a reliable way to access work, education, and Dublin Airport.

She has condemned the reduction in services, calling on the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the Government to intervene.

“This is a devastating blow to rural Kilkenny. Public transport should be a right, not a privilege. Without these services, workers, students, and families will be left stranded, further deepening the rural-urban divide,” said Senator Stephenson.

"JJ Kavanagh’s routes have long been a lifeline for those commuting to Dublin, Waterford, and other key destinations. The absence of a public option means those without access to private cars will have no alternative."

Senator Stephenson said the Government needs to step in and either restore these services, or introduce a public alternative.
