A well-known councillor and former showband frontman from Carrick-on-Suir has passed away.
Liam O'Dwyer from Ard Mhuire was first elected to the council for the Carrick area in 1974, and served until 2004. He was well known not only in his native county but neighbouring Kilkenny and Waterford, as a talented musician.
Twelve years ago he suffered a serious stroke that left him barely able to speak, but he overcame that huge setback to record a CD called Heartfelt at the age of 77 last March.
The recording was a labour of love for Liam and a shining example of how he triumphed over adversity.
The CD is filled with an eclectic mix of folk, country and pop ballads along with songs closely associated with Liam's native Tipperary, as well as Waterford and Kilkenny.
He also had a long association with Carrick Davins GAA Club and was described as an exceptional clubman.
Liam's funeral took place last Friday, in his native town. He is survived by his sons William, Ian and Mark, brother Paddy, sisters Joan, Helen, Pauline, Marian, Ermen and Monica, brothers-in-law Donal, Michael, Con, Frank, Tommy and Christy, grandchildren Liam and Tadhg, daughters-in-law Katie and Jacqui, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
