The people of Freshford and the surrounding areas were shocked and saddened on August 7 to hear of the death, after a short illness, of well known local man Joe Fortune, late of Ard Lachtain, Freshford.

The deceased who was in his late 70s had been unwell for only a very short time and his passing was rather unexpected.

He was a member of a well known and respected family in the village and was a jovial, kind hearted and well liked character. He was widely known throughout the county and beyond.

He was a gifted mechanic and carried on a business for many years in his garage at Church Street where he looked after cars and tractors for many of the people of the area. He loved music and horses and worked with horses for years and was a keen lover of the animals.

His remains were removed from Kennedys funeral home on Friday morning last for funeral Mass followed by Burial in St Lachtains Cemetery.

There was a beautiful rendering of one of his favourite song There’s A Bridal Hanging On The Wall, given by talented musicians Jackie McCracken and Jim Byrne.

He is deeply mourned by his wife Mary, sons Eddie and Thomas, daughters Mary and Noreen, grandchildren, sister Carmel, nieces, nephews and many friends and neighbours.
