THE ladies golf season drew to a close in difficult conditions at Callan GC on Saturday.

After a competitive event, Mandy O’Brien came out on top when her total of 39 points was not surpassed by any of the other 70 lady golfers. Ann Woodcock was second with 38 points while Breda Ryan took the best gross prize.

Laura Morrissey was beaten on a countback for second spot, while Teresa O’Neill shot 37 points for fourth place with Helena McCormack back in fifth to round off an excellent year for the ladies.

STABLEFORD - Michael Cullen (11) dominated this singles stableford competition (sponsored by Kilkenny Chiropractor Clinic) when he shot 43 points in excellent conditions on Sunday.

Playing solidly, Michael won by four shots from P.J. Hogan (14), who compiled 39 points during his round. Ryan O’Dwyer continues to impress with an excellent sub par round of 38 gross stableford points.

Next weekend sees a men’s singles stableford (sponsored by The Pembroke Hotel) with the Winter League continuing on Wednesday and Friday for visitors and members, with Saturdays available for members only. Green fees for visitors every day are reduced to E20 on all days of the week up to the end of March.

WINTER LEAGUE - The new season of the Winter League started last week. Played from October to March, golfers can play as many days as they want with their best three scores over the course of the competition to count. When the qualifier ends in March the top 50 players who have accumulated the highest number of points (counting their best three cards) will contest a play-off, with the winner earning a new set of irons.

The competition continues this week. Members can play at a cost of E6 for a first entry and E3 for all subsequent rounds while non members can play for E12 for their first entry and E10. Enquiries to Margaret, tel 056-7725136.

There is also an option for members to begin paying next year’s sub. Anyone using the fairways credit system can just keep paying the monthly deductions in order to help with next year’s contribution.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the lotto jackpot. Numbers drawn were 11, 13 and 35. Lucky dip winners were Linda O’Donovan, Helena McCormack and Kitty Hackett, while sellers’ prizes went to John Kirwan and Joe Cuddihy. This week’s draw will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm.
