Kilkenny boxing champion, Clare Grace, jetted out to the European Elite women’s senior championships this morning.
The Callan boxing club member only finished exams at DCU on Tuesday before joining the other four members of the Irish team, who spent the last week at a training camp in Germany, to get ready for departure.
The championships are being staged in Bucharest, Hungary. The boxers will weigh-in on Thursday and the draws for the fight schedule will be made on Friday.
The action will begin on Saturday, and the championships will run for the week.
“Clare is ready,” insisted her 81-year-old Callan mentor, Jimmy Walsh, after she trained in the local club on Sunday. “She had a touch of a cold, but she should be okay.
“She is facing into the toughest challenge of her career,” he said of the prospects facing the 20-year-old.
Clare boxes in the 69kgs division. The team includes Olympic Games champion, Katie Taylor, who will be chasing a sixth successive gold medal.
