KIERAN Wall (5) continues to show good form. Kieran won the gross prize last week at Kilkenny golf club in the PGA tankard and he followed that up with a 72 gross to give him a 67 nett and overall win in the March monthly medal.
Kieran came home in level par 35 despite taking a double bogey five on the 15th. This was offset by birdies on the 13th and 14th to add to his birdie on the 9th. Kieran edged out Joe Fitzpatrick (10) on the back nine.
Joe shot consistent halves of 39 and 38 to claim second prize. Third was Tom Moore (14) on 68. Richard Walsh, fresh from his golfing escapades in Portugal, won the gross with a 70. Liam Barrett (14) was fifth on 68 despite taking an eight on the 12th.
Joe O’Neill (16) won sixth prize with a 69. Joe took 47 shots on the front nine. However, he showed a big improvement on the back nine, only taking 38 strokes.
The first Wednesday ladies and gents Open singles of the season was played last week. The frost delayed the start and due to the drainage works on the 7th hole the competition was restricted to 16 holes.
The scoring was very good. Carl Widger (11) returned 37 points to edge out Billy Burke (9) on the back eight. The ladies section was won by Jacintha Culliton (21), Castlecomer with 31 points.
Saturdays men’s crosscard was a four person team event over 13 holes with two scores counting. It was won by Frank Byrne (14), Richie Phelan (15), Chris Rainey (21) and Mick Butler (16) with a great score of 71 points.
They had three points to spare form Sean Boland, Maurice Ryan, Gerry O’Dwyer and Alan Snype on 68 points.
There will be no crosscard on Saturday due to time slots allocated for the Spring singles competition. These have been allocated as there is a limited time sheet on Sunday due to Senior Alliance outing.
The winners in the men’s senior competition on Thursday were Noel Skehan (12), Martin Cody (20), Joe O’Driscoll (26), Tim O’Mahony (27) with 60 points. They had one point to spare from Christy Power (12), Noel O’Sullivan (16), Dermot Moloney (21) and Eamon Molloy (23) on 59 points.
The monthly prize giving was on Friday night. Prizes for the five rounds of the Winter League, the PGA Tankard, the ladies and gents Open singles (March 2) and the three person team event (February 20) were presented. Thanks to all those who turned up to collect their prizes. Any prizes which were not collected can be picked up from the office.
PITCH MARKS: As the season gets underway we would request all members and visitors to pay particular attention to repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers and replacing divots. While the replacing of divots and repairing pitch marks have improved, unfortunately the same cannot be said for raking bunkers.
There is nothing as irritating as walking into a bunker to find a ball in a foot print. Rakes are placed in all bunkers and the club would ask players to have consideration for those coming behind them and ensure as they exit a bunker that they leave it raked properly.
