The dates for this year’s annual meetings of Callan golf club have been confirmed. The ladies meeting will be on Friday, December 2 while the men’s section will hold theirs the following night.

December 3 is also the date for the presentation of the matchplay awards as well as the Player of the Year award in what should be an excellent pre-Christmas social event. Also, when mentioning Christmas, there are gift vouchers available from the club which can be redeemed against next year’s sub which could be the ideal gift for a loved one.

With regard to the annual meeting, this is when committee members are required for next year’s various committees. The club needs participation and would welcome all volunteers from all sections of the club to nominate themselves for committees or sub-committees by contacting Margaret in the office or a committee member.

It has been a wonderful year for people making themselves available for the varying positions of responsibility. When there are many people involved it makes the jobs much easier and more enjoyable.

There are literally hundreds of volunteers needed for all the positions with course, etiquette, fund-raising, sponsorship, junior section, club classics, competitions, team management, handicaps, social events, facebook, internet communications all needing assistance. Members have been asked to give the issue serious thought before the AGMs’.

WINTER LEAGUE: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday last saw the continuation of the Open Winter League which will see the winner next Spring win a superb set of irons to start the golf season. The format of the competition is that over the months of October, November, December, January, February and March each competitor can play as many days as they want with their best three scores over the course of the competition to count.

When the qualifier ends in March the top 50 players who have accumulated the highest number of points (counting their best three cards) will play-off. The winner will be presented with a brand new set of top class irons.

An exciting element of this league is that it allows people to play every week on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday (members only) at a cost of 6 Euro for a first entry for a member and just 3 Euro for all subsequent rounds. That is fabulous value while. Non-members can play for 12 Euro for their first entry and 10 Euro for all subsequent entries.

This cost obviously applies to societies also which spells fantastic value for visitors when a round of golf for just 10 Euro on a Saturday in particular has excellent appeal. There will be monthly prizes also. It promises to be a busy Winter in Callan.

Enquiries by societies and individuals can be made by contacting Margaret (056-7725136).

MEMBERSHIP: Callan golf club have made a membership option available to new or lapsed members. For 740 Euro for men or 745 Euro for ladies (the extra 5 Euro is a GUI issue) anyone who takes up this option will be a member from now until January 2013.

It is an opportunity to avail of the course and its facilities throughout the next 16 months as well as using the practise facilities to hone skills during the winter and spring. To avail of the offer contact Margaret (056-7725136) or log on to to learn all about the club.
