The St Patrick’s weekend competitions at Kileknny golf club attracted large numbers with the good weather on Sunday and Monday helping to produce good scoring.
Patrick Dore (14) and David O’Mahony (13) teamed up with Rory MacEneaney (6) to win the Paddy Raggett Homes three person team event with 89 points. They beat Eamon Everard (22), Lourda Everard (23) and Liam Everard (16), Thurles, who also returned 89 points on the count back.
Third on 87 points went to Pat Butler (7), Maurice Ryan (14) and Anthony White (9), Mountain View.
The four person team event played on bank holiday Monday was won by Owen Phelan (12), Alan Phelan (1), Paddy Fitzpatrick (11) and Lar Byrne (6) with a great score of 98 points. They had 10 birdies on the card with all four players managing at least one birdie.
Second place went to Castleocmer’s E. Brennan (11), Jason Brennan (5), John Smith (4) and Michael Daly (14) with 96 points. Michael Leahy (11), Michael Drea (20), Martin Holohan (12) and Seamus McGuire (11) secured third place on 94 points. The remaining two prizes were won with 92 points.
The ladies competition last week was an 18 hole singles stableford. The winner on 39 points was Catherine Leahy (27). Catherine turned with only 16 points but covered the back nine in eight over which gave her 23 points. Joan O’Gorman (22) secured second place on 37 points.
Joan had a moderate 15 points on the front, but added 22 on the back. Mary Leahy Browne (3) shot 79 gross to win the gross prize with 30 points.
Scoring in the senior men’s competition on Thursday was low compared to recent weeks. It was won by Andy MacEneaney (16), Jack Nolan (22), Frank Dalton (21) and Eddie Geraghty (22) with 62 points. Second on 61 points went to Pat Foley (11), Paddy Byrne (21), Paddy Halley (25) and Jim O’Connell (27).
Third place on the same score were John O’Donovan (17), Michael O’Neill (22), Peter McQuillan (24) and Tom Buckley (31).
The winners of the senior ladies competition were Brid White, Josie Bolger and Mary Gaffney with a great scone of 40 points for the nine holes. They had six points to spare over Kitty Nolan. Mary Gorman and Jane Duggan on 34 points.
FOURSOMES: The entry sheets for the men’s foursomes and mixed foursomes are posted on the men’s notice board under the stairs. The entry fee is €12 per pair for each competition. Players are requested to place their names on the sheets and place the appropriate entry fee in the envelopes provided.
Any member who does not have a partner lined up please leave your name in the office and the club will pass it on if someone else is looking for a partner.
PRESENTATION: The monthly prize presentation was held on Friday night. A special thanks went all the winners who turned up. It was good to see players having the courtesy to turn for prizegivings. It was appreciated by the Captain, competition secretary and all involved in arranging the competitions.
GREENS: Having played in the four person team event late on Monday afternoon it was pleasing to see that the message concerning pitch marks seems to be getting home. While there were still some unrepaired pitch marks, they were not as prevalent as they have been recently. Well done to all.
INTER CLUB: Team manager of the Pierce Purcell, Alan Snype has placed a sheet on the men’s notice board for those players who are interested in being part of the panel. Players who are handicapped between 12 and 16 and interested please place your name on the sheet.
The minimum combination is 27. No player can have gone below 12 handicap last year.
SNOOKER: Gabriel Maher defeated Christy Power by two frames to one in the singles snooker semi-final. Gabriel will play the winner of the other semi final between Luke Kelly and Martin Hanrick.
