Team members were disappointed to exit the Cup on a 5-4 scoreline, despite having taken two matches in Kilkenny.

The Pierce Purcell team put up a good performance on Saturday, but came up shy of qualifying for the knockout stages on Sunday. The competition was held in Borris Golf Club.

LADIES - The Intermediate team were beaten in Callan against Castlecomer. It was a hard-fought battle with Deirdre McCabe going to the 23rd hole and Ann Farrell going to the 19th after being five down at one stage. Despite great efforts it wasn’t to be on the day. The players were Deirdre McCabe, Eileen Tobin, Ann Farrell, Ger Hickey and Sally Kavanagh.

There was better luck for the Gowran Park minor team, who had a great win over Kilkenny in New Ross. Team was Karen Haughney, Catherine O’Driscoll, Joan Murphy, Catherine O’Connor and Helen Dunne.

It was third time lucky for the Finn Trophy team, who got past the first round of the competition at the third attempt when they beat Waterford Castle at Gowran Park. The team featured Niamh Connolly & Deirdre McCabe, Sinead Kearney & Karen Haughney, Ann Mullins & Ger Hickey, Breda Bolger & Catherine O’Connor and Nora Barron & Helen Dunne.

Results, Australian Spoons: 1 Ger Hickey & Gay Latchford, 38pts; 2 Deirdre McCabe & Catherine O’Connor, 37pts.

JUNIORS - The Under-15 Boys’ Leinster Inter Club Matchplay begins shortly. All eligible juniors are asked to attend a practice in Gowran Park on Saturday at 9am.

Coaching for junior boys and girls of all ages continues each Saturday, with all welcome to attend. A Summer programme of events and competitions will also begin in June.

LEINSTER - The club’s South Leinster team were beaten in a close-fought first round match against defending champions Dunmurray Springs, who had the advantage of a home draw.

At home good results from the Gowran Park team of Pat Staunton (won 4&3), Liam Hutchinson (won 4&3) and Tom Dack (lost 4&3) gave the locals a good chance of causing an upset.

The away team had it all to do in very windy conditions. Aidan Grogan lipped out on the 18th to lose one down. James Fitzgerald was one up standing on the 18th, while James Fisher and Tommy Bolger were both beaten 3&2.

Team managers Melvyn Kennedy and John Barcoe thanked all involved for their efforts.

SINGLES - The Open Singles takes centre stage across the June Bank Holiday Weekend. Running from the Friday to Monday, competitors are invited to nominate a society for a free draw. The winning society will win a Friday outing free of charge.
