Green finds good form and shoot through to play-off

THE Open singles series continues to gather pace at Callan golf club with more golfers joining the ranks who have qualified for the Autumn play-off. This week John Green found good form again to win the day with 39 points.

THE Open singles series continues to gather pace at Callan golf club with more golfers joining the ranks who have qualified for the Autumn play-off. This week John Green found good form again to win the day with 39 points.

John was joined in the final by Sean Morrisey, who was narrowly pipped having compiled 38 points. Ryan O’Dwyer won his third gross in two weeks with 36 gross off 2 handicap. Ryan also impressed with his performance in the Captain’s prize earlier.

The popularity of the Open competitions is getting stronger every year and this year has broken all records since the series began. There are a number of weeks remaining before the finale for those who have not booked their place in the play-off. The popular early bird option remains for visitors before noon each Wednesday.

The weekend’s fourball v par, sponsored by Doyles Concrete, was a close run affair. There was a large number of participants who enjoyed the beautiful presentation of the course as well as favourable weather conditions.

Liam Brennan and Nicky Brennan produced an excellent finish to see off the pair of Michael Walsh (bar and catering) and Mick Byrne (handicap secretary). Liam and Nicky and Michael and Mick had excellent totals of 8 up and were only separated by the formers better finish.

All four are in good form and will look to be as competitive in next week’s Presidents Shield which will be contested over next weekend.

LADIES FOURBALL - Claire Henriques and Margaret T. O’Shea produced a good back nine to win the ladies fourball on Tuesday, July 19. Claire and Margaret had a solid total of 39 points to beat Evelyne Bookle and Noelle O’Driscoll by one shot.

Conditions were favourable to good. Both pairs played very well on ultra fast greens. The large number of ladies enjoyed the weather. Third was Catherine Davis and Celine Egan with 36 points.

This weekend the President’s Shield (Murt Duggan) is open to all members. There are overall prizes as well as ladies and gents prizes on offer. The overall winner will take home the perpetual Shield.

Last year Tipperary hurling legend, John Leahy, triumph. John was a fitting winner as Murt had a long association with Tipperary hurling in conjunction with his wonderful contribution to Callan golf club throughout his long membership.

Times are available from or by contacting the Proshop. The competiton is on Saturday and Sunday.

The ladies Boyne team are out on August 8. They are wished the best of luck. The Boyne team are the last team involved in inter-club competition.

JUNIOR CAMP - Callan golf club opens its doors to provide a great oppurtunity for young golfers in August. A summer camp will be held for five days between the 8th and 12th. It is open to members and non-members.

The young golfers will be given oppurtunities to learn the skills of the game in a fun way each morning from 10am to 1pm. The highpoint of the week will be a trip to the putting green in Mount Juliet.

The week will cost 40 Euro per child. If there is more than one child from the same family the first child costs 40 Euro with 15 Euro for each additional child. It should be a wonderful week. Volunteers are needed to ensure its smooth running.

Those interested in helping out (one day or for the week) should contact Sean Walzer through the club or for parents to enroll their children.

TWO CLUB COMPETITION - There is a novelty competition on Bank Holiday Monday which allows participants to carry three clubs (ie. a putter plus two other clubs). As well as being fun there is a skill element to the competition which encourages golfers to use their imagination to produce different shots with the two clubs.

The competition gets underway at 2pm with all invited to participate.
