Golfers enjoy Summer sunshine

THE fourball qualifier, held in aid of the National Council for the Blind, was a great success in the Summer sunshine at Gowran Park GC over the weekend.

Following the event the leading players were selected to go on and represent Gowran Park in the county final. David Vaughan (8) and Richie Lowry (8) took the leading spot with a great score of 43 points with an allowance of three-quarters of handicap. The runner-ups spot went to Joe Farrell (7) and Alan Cleere (14) with a score of 41 points.

MEMBERS - The members’ nine hole competition, which continues today (Wednesday), is proving as popular as ever. Last week the competition resulted in a win for Niamh Bolger, who scored 23 points over the nine holes. There is no timesheet in place on Wednesday evenings. Members are invited to turn up and join in with fellow golfers to enjoy a relaxing round and the social get-together afterwards.

Members who stay on for results and presentation are included in a weekly draw, with one person going forward to the final draw at the end of the season when one lucky member will win free membership for 2013.

Prizewinners from previous competitions during April and May are invited to attend to this week’s presentation night, which will held tonight (Wednesday) in the clubhouse at 9.30pm.

BANK HOLIDAY - An open 18 hole singles competition will be held at Gowran Park over the Bank Holiday Weekend. The competition will run from Friday to Monday, with a prize for the best daily score together with overall prizes.

RESULT - Results, ladies 18 hole stableford, May 22: 1 Hilary Dick (19), 38pts; 2 Judy Dick (21), 37pts.

LADIES - The ladies Boyne Team had a great result, beating Borris in the first round of the competition. In a close tie, Gowran Park went through after winning the last match on the 21st hole.

Team: Nora Barron & Joan Murphy (manager), Peggy Canning & Cathy Hoyne, Eileen Tobin & Ger Hickey and Ann Mullins & Kathleen Whitehead.

The Junior Cup team weren’t as fortunate, going down to Rathdowney in the second round at Castlecomer GC. Thanks went to all caddies and supporters. Team was Ann Mullins, Nora Barron, Kate Hennessy, Sinead Kearney and Deirdre McCabe. Manager was Kerri Bolger.

The Miele Team will take on Mount Juliet in the first round of their competition tomorrow (Thursday).

JUNIORS - The Summer coaching programme will begin on Wednesday, June 13. Junior/juvenile golfers interested in participating must return their forms to Dominic Bolger before Friday.

The junior Summer competitions begin on Monday, June 11. Participants in the 18 hole competition to meet at 10am to 10.30am start, with nine hole players meeting at 12 noon for 12.30pm start. Format will be decided on the day.

The junior matchplay draw has been posted on the junior noticeboard. Preliminary round must be played by Saturday, June 17.

The next session of the Girls ‘N’ Golf programme will be held on Saturday. Both groups to meet at 4pm at the practice ground.
