News from Gowran Park Golf Club
THERE was a busy weekend of golf at Gowran Park GC as the club launched their membership offers for 2013.
The weekly Thursday open singles overlapped to Friday and proved to be a big success of last week. Competition was hot on the course with visiting golfers taking the major honours. Mountain View’s Gary Ryan, playing off 10, took the spoils with a great score of 43 points while Daniel O’Leary (New Ross), playing off 13, was the runner-up on 42 points. Callan’s Michael Rafter was third with 40 points.
FOURBALL - The weekend continued with an open fourball on Sunday, which boasted a full timesheet. The father and son pairing Joe and John Lannon won with a superb score of 47 points. The highlight of their round was an eagle for John on the doglegged par four sixth hole. The Thomastown natives edged out visiting golfers Gearoid McGuire (Thurles) and Kevin Kenny (Slievenamon) into second place one point further back on 46 points.
Low handicappers Alan Harty (West Waterford) and Peter Mullaney (Dungarvan), both playing off two handicap, took third place on 45 points. The highlight of their round was a run of birdies from holes six to eight. With no dropped shot the pair were seven under on a gross score over the 18 holes.
COURSE WORKS - The Autumn program of hollow coring and sanding of greens will be held early next week. This essential work will help to maintain the good standard of greens ahead of the Winter schedule.
AUTUMN LEAGUE - This year’s offering of the popular Autumn League will be launched on Thursday, October 11.
This singles competition can be played every Thursday and/or Friday from October through to early December. Three qualifiers and equals from each week will go forward to the grand final, which will be held on Friday, December 14.
Entry fee is E20 for visitors and E5 for members.
RACING - Owing to a race meeting there will be no golf on Sunday, September 26.
RESULTS - Results, open singles, September 13/14: 1 G. Ryan (Mountain View, 10), 43pts; 2 D. O’Leary (New Ross, 13), 42pts; 3 M. Rafter (Callan, 16), 40pts. Back nine: A. O’Connor (New Ross, 16), 21pts.
Results, ladies 18 hole stableford, September 12: 1 Sarah Murphy (28), 38pts; 2 Anne Mullins (15), 36pts.
LADIES - The draw for the ladies matchplay competition has been posted in the ladies locker room. The first round must be played by Sunday, September 30.
Lady Captain Anne Mullins will hold her day out to Mount Wolseley on Friday. Golfers are asked to meet at 1.30pm for 2pm tee time.
MATCHPLAY - The Gowran mixed foursomes matchplay competition, a new addition to the club, has proven to be very successful. The Scotch foursomes format, with the men playing off the blue tees, has resulted in many close matches played in great spirit. It has now reached the quarter-final stage.
