Favourable weather conditions at made for hot scoring at the members’ 18-hole singles competition at Gowran Park GC over the weekend.

Local man Michael Doyle took the leading spot with a superb score of 44pts with Terry Cassin runner-up on 43pts. Pat Roche took third place one point further back..

The members’ monthly medal 18-hole singles competition will he held this weekend. The timesheet is available online.

MATCHPLAY - The finals of the club fourball and the club singles competitions were held over the weekend. Darren Carroll beat J.J. Ryan in the final of the singles competition while the father and son pairing of Kieran Mahon snr and jnr saw off Paddy McGuinness and Mick Dillon in the fourball final. After a ding-dong battle the match was finally decided on the 19th green.

AUTUMN - The Autumn League will begin on Thursday, October 10. This singles competition can be played every Thursday and/or Friday from October to early December.

Three qualifiers plus equals from each week will go forward to the grand final, which will be held on Friday, December 13.

Entry fee is €20 for visitors, including a choice of either a breakfast roll or soup and sandwich.

ALLIANCE - The South-Eastern Junior Alliance begin their Winter outings at Clonmel GC next weekend. Limited spaces are available for Gowran Park members - contact the office for details.

The Alliance will visit a number of courses over the Winter months including Kilkenny, Callan, Waterford, Carrick-on-Suir, West Waterford and Dungarvan.

CLUB WEEK - The Club Promotion Week will run from Wednesday, October 23 to Sunday, October 28. The event incorporating membership offers, society golf and all other golf activity.

The initiative will coincide with a daily four-person team event with a first prize of an outing and meal for a society of up to 25 people. Second prize will be a free golf outing for group of 15 and third prize of an outing for a group of 10.

All participants will be entered into a draw for one free membership of Gowran Park GC for 2014.

Entry fee for these competitions will be €60 per team weekdays and €80 per team on Saturday and Sunday. Timesheets are available online or from 056-7726699.

MIXED - Eamon Kealy and Gay Latchford won the 2013 club Mixed Foursomes matchplay, beating Joe Farrell and Ann Mullins in the final.

RESULTS - Results, golden golfers 11-hole fourball, September 27: 1 Eamon Kealy (15) & Jim Fisher (20), 27pts; 2 Kate Hennessey (10) & Frank Lee (15), 26pts; 3 Tony Dooley (13) & Sally Kavanagh (23), 23pts c/b. Next competition is on Friday, October 11. Draw is at 10am.

Results, ladies 18-hole v-par competition, September 25: 1 E. Donnelly (28), six up; 2 J. Dick (12), five up.

DIARY - Thursday: Open 18-hole singles. Friday/Saturday: Horse-racing - no golf.

Sunday: Men’s monthly medal. Tuesday: Seniors open singles (visitor €15, member €5).

Mount Juliet

The last major of the season for the ladies at Mount Juliet GC saw golfers compete for Lady President Rita Garvey’s Prize on Wednesday.

The event was won in some style by Rebecca Nixon, who returned a great score of 41pts to win by two shots from her nearest rival, Ursula Mason. There was a tie for third and fourth place on 37pts but Paula McEnery beat Bernie Madigan on a countback. This was the final competition in the Golfer of the Year for the ladies but it did not alter the results as Ruth Mulholland had already been declared the winner.

FOURBALL - Sunday’s member/guest fourball stableford competition was won by Graham Robinson and his partner James Murphy from Wexford with 47pts. They had three points to spare from Mick Byrne and Joe Tierney, who beat Pat Price snr and George O’Connor on a countback.

TRIANGULAR - A triangular competition between teams from Fota Island, Carton House and Mount Juliet was held last week.

The competition, the brainchild of past captains from Fota Island and Mount Juliet Tom Hennessey and Alan Hoyne, was a singles stableford with three points awarded to the best score in each three ball, with two points for second place and one point for third place. Each team consisted of the President, Captain, Past Captain and Vice Captain of each club, together with nine other members. Carton House won the trophy by a single point from Mount Juliet with Fota Island in third place. Best score of the day was returned by Mount Juliet’s Paul Madigan, who had a shot an impressive 42pts off three handicap.

FINAL - The scoreline from last week’s McCalmont Cup was reported as a 4&3 win for P.J. Aylward. The correct score saw Aylward beat Mark Magnier in a tight match on the 17th hole.

Fantastic scoring saw visitors dominate the latest chapter of the O’Dwyer Golf Stores open singles at Callan GC.

Robbie Ryan from Mountain View was the best scorer on the day with 42pts with Kilkenny member Michael Comerford second on 40pts. Michael, who was a member in Callan for a number of years, has the playoff to look forward to this month when he will return along with Robbie to contest the season finale. Richie Guilfoyle from Kilkenny took the gross honours and will also be invited to the final.

FOURBALL - Richard Needham and Mick Hickey were in great form during the weekend’s fourball competition. Their 46pt total was enough to beat Jimmy Hillman and Davy Morris, who tallied 43pts.

JUNIOR CUP - The Callan ladies team’s brave Junior Cup challenge came to an end when they were beaten by a top class Cork outfit in Mullingar on Thursday. Midleton provided the opposition and proved too strong for the Kilkenny contingent. Rita O’Neill managed the team wonderfully throughout the campaign, with the side doing the club proud.

MOUNT CARMEL - The Mount Carmel Classic will be held on Friday, October 11 and Saturday, October 12. This classic is a vital fund-raiser for the organisation, who nurse the elderly in the most caring and respectful of manners.

Tee times for the classic, which costs €60 per team, are available from Robert Woodcock, tel 087-6592977; Bea O’Donovan, tel 056-7725136 or Anne Walpole, tel 056-7725301. All sponsorship (donations, tee boxes or prizes) would also be gratefully received.

MEMBERSHIP - Club membership for 2014 is now open with the cost for new or lapsed members starting from €499 (€449 for seniors). Membership for existing members has also been reduced to €549 with an option of inviting in a new/lapsed member for €449 for both the new/lapsed member and the existing member.

A large crowd took to the golf course to compete for President Brian Harrington’s prize competition at Castlecomer GC over the weekend.

There was a strong field in both the men’s and ladies sections with the prizes keenly contested on the course, which was in great condition.

Jason Brennan had to be content with second place in the Captain’s Prize, but went one better this time when he captured the spoils in the men’s section. A great round of one over par saw him emerge victorious on the back nine with a 39pt total. John Shore also had a great score of 39pts to take second place with Michael Dermody third on 38pts.

In the ladies section Ann Ring continued her recent good form to claim first prize with 39pts. Maria Downey secured second place with a 35pt finish, with Noreen Kinsella third on 34pts.
