The following are the notes this week from golf clubs around County Kilkenny:
Thomas Nevin (10) continued his good form of late by winning the members’ Winter League at Gowran Park GC at the weekend.
Thomas scored 26pts over the 11 holes at the weekend, winning on a countback from Olan Corcoran (8). Martin Donohoe was third on a countback, having also finished on 25pts.
The result saw Thomas win the Winter league with a final tally of 97pts, finishing five clear of Mick Dillon in second place.
Presentation of prizes will take place after the Christmas Gala Day on Saturday.
TURKEY/HAMS - The final open singles competition of the year for turkeys and hams will be held on Sunday. A timesheet is now available online or from 056-7726699.
GALA - Members are reminded that the Christmas Gala Day and golf outing will be held on Saturday. The competition will be a team event, with a draw for partners to be held at 12 noon.
Prize-giving and a social evening will be held after the golf, along with presentations to respective club fourball and matchplay winners. All members are encouraged to attend. Transport home will be provided after the party.
AUTUMN SERIES - The final of the Autumn Series will be held on Friday. Qualifiers from the last number of weeks have been contacted and are asked to register on the day at 10am. Draw for partners is at 10.15am, with a shotgun start at 10.30am.
CHRISTMAS - This year’s Christmas Championship will be a singles event. Open to men and ladies, it will run from Friday, December 27 to Tuesday, December 31. Three qualifiers, plus equals, from each day will go forward to the final on Saturday, January 4.
Timesheets, which will be in operation daily, are available from www.gowranpark.ie or 056-7726699. Entry fee for visitors is €20, including soup and sandwich.
LADIES - Results, ladies 11-hole hamper, December 4: 1 Gay Latchford (23), 25pts; 2 Catherine O’Driscoll (22), 24pts; 3 Rachel Dick (22), 23pts.
Local members Ursula Mason and Kathleen Whitehead were prize-winners in the Ladies Squirrels Alliance Christmas outing, which was held in Mount Wolseley.

The annual meeting of the men’s section of Callan GC will be held in the clubhouse on Friday.

OPEN - The club will host an open 18-hole two person competition (any combination) from St Stephen’s Day until Sunday, December 29. Cost of entry is €10 for visitors, €8 for members.
MEETING - There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the ladies club, which was held recently. Outgoing President Linda Adair thanked the committee and all who worked hard to make the year such a great success. She also congratulated the Junior Cup team and the Finn Trophy team on their achievements during the year, thanking players, caddies and managers for their commitment.
In her address outgoing Lady Captain Rose Brophy thanked captain Paul Cashin and president John Kinchella for all their support during the year. She also thanked Sheila Kirby and Catherine Dore for their time given to organising the mixed competition every Friday evening during the Summer, an event which was enjoyed by all who played.
Incoming Lady Captain Kathleen Phelan thanked Rose for nominating her last year. The new captain, who is looking forward to another successful year, nominated Mary Manning as her vice-captain.

ALLIANCE - The club hosted a very successful Senior Alliance recently. Sixty-two golfers competed, with local member Linda Adair among the prize-winners.

John Walsh was the winner of the Christmas Hamper competition at Mountain View GC on Sunday.
Playing off seven, John took the spoils with a score of 43pts. He was closely followed by Joe Earle (19) on 42pts and John Sheil (18), who also finished with 42pts.
This Sunday’s competition, which will also have more hampers up for grabs, will be a single stableford.
MEMBERSHIP - Members are reminded that fees for 2014 are now due. The full membership fee has been reduced to €399. Further information on all the 2014 rates is available from the clubhouse.
Management would like all fees paid by January 31 in readiness for the Captains’ Drive-In, which is scheduled for mid February.

There was a great attendance when Castlecomer GC held their Captains’ Christmas party on Saturday.
Presentations were made to the club matchplay champions, the Leinster Jimmy Bruen champions and the Ladies Granard Cup champions. Presentations were then made to both the men’s and ladies Golfer of the Year award winners, Jason Brennan and Ann Ring.
Following a buffet supper all present were entertained by music from The Irish House Party. A great night was had by all.
LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club lotto. Numbers drawn were 2, 6, 10 and 20. The jackpot is now €6,200.

Sixteen teams played in the New Ross GC seniors’ annual Christmas outing on Thursday in mixed weather conditions.
Following a fine start the day gradually deteriorated, with rain and gale-force winds making life uncomfortable for golfers, before clearing away again in the afternoon.
With trying conditions taking their toll on scoring, the team of Willie Kelly (17), Pat Traynor (17), Richie Byrne (18) and Frank Boyle (24) won the competition with a 90pt total. In second place, on 88pts, were Jim Meggs (13), Bobby Dwyer (18), Pat Ryan (19) and Donal Kavanagh (22). Patsy Farrell (10), Mick Wade (21), Michael Vaughan (23) and Martin Burke (23) were third on 87pts, beating Andy Ronan (14), Sean O hUginn (16) John F. Roche (17) and Tom Kent (27) on countback.
The three-person team of Jimmy Furlong (10), Peter Goggin (18) and Tony Sexton (22) were fifth on 86pts. Sixth prize went to Pascal Bolger (16), Luke Power (17), Brian Dolan (20) and Tom Furlong (27), also on 86pts.
In seventh spot, a point behind, were John Murphy (16), Johnny Watson (17), Michael Long (21) and Seamus Bradley (21). The eighth and final prize went to Joe O’Farrell (14), Michael Gannon (15), Liam Glasheen (19) and Ollie Brennan, who also finished with 85pts.
The seniors were joined by the incoming captain of the parent club, Paschal Bolger, and incoming president, Jimmy Meggs, both of whom figured in the above prizes. After golf more than 60 golfers sat down to Christmas dinner prepared by resident chef Padraig Murphy.
There were two nearest the pin prizes, sponsored by Joe O’Farrell, but only Larry Shannon won on the ninth. The prize from the 11th hole will be carried over to the December 12 outing. The seniors’ final outing of 2013 is on Thursday, December 19.
