The Berkeley ladies basketball team from Thomastown have been going great guns on two fronts this season to date.

The Berkeley ladies basketball team from Thomastown have been going great guns on two fronts this season to date.

The completion of round one of the Kilkenny and South East Area League left them sitting proudly on top of the table. They are also competing in the Midlands Regional League.

They have reached the half-way stage of this league. They are in second position out of six teams, compliments of wins over Ballyroan Mavericks, Moate, Rathangan, Ballyroan Cougars and Carlow IT.

Their only defeat was suffered against Portlaoise Panthers in a hard fought game in St Mary’s hall. By finishing in the top three they have qualified the ladies for Division I for the second round of the league.

Big games to come before the weekend finals are decided in May are against Portlaoise 2, Carlow IT, Portlaoise and Ballyroan 1.

Their next home game is against Portlaoise 2 on Saturday, February 1 (8pm) in O’Loughlin’s. This will be a tough game and all support would be greatly appreciated.

Castlecomer 42, South Tipp Titans 19

The Castlecomer boys under-14 team maintained their unbeaten run with a comprehensive 42-19 win over South Tipp Titans in the league in O’Loughlin’s.

The early exchanges gave no indication of the ease with which the winners would eventually get home as the Tipperary boys matched ’Comer basket for basket.

However, once James Brennan edged them 8-6 in front nearing the end of the first quarter, ’Comer gradually took a stranglehold on the game and they eased further ahead as the game progressed.

Cathal Holland (18) was tormentor in chief of the Titans, but Brennan (14) was also in top form and the losers really had no answer to this dynamic pair.

In the end the ’Comer lads showed why they will be serious contenders for this title. Others who did well were Conor McMahon, Darragh O’Shea and Conor Rowe.
