Cunningham’s fine form continues in the Open

Adrian Cunningham took first place, producing an excellent total of 43 points. Adrian has been in fine form lately and his total saw him win by three shots from Mickey Comerford (40 points) with Martin O’Halloran scooping the gross prize. Mountain View’s Seamus Fitzpatrick, one of a large number of visitors, also earned a berth in this year’s final in Autumn.

The series continues every Wednesday, with an early bird option available for visitors before noon.

TEAM - Kevin O’Driscoll and Joe Madigan produced some great golf to dominate the two-person team at the weekend. Kevin and Joe finished with a 47 point haul which saw them home by a point from John Kennedy and Rollie Komar.

There was a large entry for the competition, which was played in nice conditions, with the worthy winners coming home with a fine total.

MATCHPLAY - Following the Singles Matchplay qualifier, the opening round draw was made. All matches must be played by April 30. Following this date, a redraw for the second round will be made. Membership should be paid before commencing the opening round.

INTER-CLUB - Callan’s Duggan Cup team got off to a fantastic start with an excellent victory over Mount Juliet in the opening round of this year’s competition.

Brian Cullen & Paddy Hickey, Martin Maher & Pat Cunningham and Liam Brennan & Marty Parker all won in Callan while Liam Duggan & Mick Fitzpatrick and Jim Kirby & John Healy performed excellently in Mount Juliet to complete the victory.

The ladies got off to a flying start in their inter-club matches. The Minor Cup team were first into action, taking on Gowran on neutral ground at Kilkenny GC.

The Callan team hit top form from the first tee, finishing with wins on the 17th, 14th and 16th holes to claim the overall match. The remaining two matches were called in four up and one down. Team members were Marie Gorey, Olive Walsh, Annette Hogan, Theresa O’Neill and Pauline O’Brien.

It was another neutral venue as the ladies Intermediate Cup team had their first match against Baltinglass at Gowran Park GC. Again the locals showed their determination, beating a strong Baltinglass side by winning on holes 14, 15 and 16 to claim the match

Team members were Lorraine Donovan, Teresa Freyne, Evelyn Bookle, Claire Henriques, Mary Barry and Linda Adaire.

LADIES - The ladies weekly 18 hole competition resumed in glorious weather conditions. With temperatures rising to 17 degrees the golfers responded by posting equally hot scores. Results are printed below.

The Junior alliance was held in Kilkenny GC recently. Three Callan ladies featured in the prizes. They were Celine Egan, Margaret Comerford and Miriam Fennelly.

The Ladies Open Day will be held on Tuesday. Format is an open singles stableford competition.

LESSONS - Golf lessons will start at Callan GC this month. These are being run in conjunction with Kilkenny Recreation and Sports Partnership and are funded by the HSE. The club will contact interested participants about dates and times.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club’s lotto. Numbers drawn were 8, 19 and 29. Lucky Dip (E30) winners were Paddy O’Brien, Maura O’Brien and Elaine Dalton. Sellers’ prize went to John Kirwan.
