Murphy claims Captain’s Prize

THERE was a variety of weather conditions, but the climate didn’t affect scoring when Michael O’Neill held his Captain’s prize at New Ross GC recently.

THERE was a variety of weather conditions, but the climate didn’t affect scoring when Michael O’Neill held his Captain’s prize at New Ross GC recently.

A large field competed for the prize, with more than 90 golfers qualifying for the Sunday play-off. The course was in excellent condition, thanks to the hard work of Seamus Power and his team. The eventual winner of the Captain’s prize for 2012 was Liam Murphy, who plays off a handicap of 13. In second place, beaten on a countback was Des Redmond. The evergreen Noel Kehoe came third.

The captain, in his presentation speech, thanked all the club officers for their contribution. Special mention was given to the professional staff in the shop, catering, course, bar staff and office staff, without whom the club would not operate to its levels.

Results, Captain’s prize: 1 L. Murphy (13), 137pts (last 18); 2 D. Redmond (20), 137pts; 3 N. Kehoe (18), 138pts; 4 M. Kelleher (11), 139pts; gross N. Cashin (5), 149pts. Cat One: J. Cashin. Cat Two: R. Shannon. Cat Three: P. Lynch. Cat Four: P. Walsh.

OPEN WEEK - Open week competitions continue at the club this week Full details of all competitions can be viewed on the club website, www.newrossgolfclub.ie.

BRUEN CUP - The club will stage the final of the Jimmy Bruen Cup this Sunday. As a consequence, the course will not available to members until later in the afternoon.

SENIORS - Owing to weather the Seniors had no outing on Thursday. There will be an open three-person scramble tomorrow (Thursday), which is part of the Open Week programme. The usual draw for teams among the seniors has been made and is available on the club website.

The Autumn Seniors Alliance outing is at Waterford GC. The following are the New Ross allotted tee times: 9.56am - Dick Cuddihy, Tom Kent, Paul Laffan & Jamesie Murphy. 10.04am - Denis Kirwan, John Murphy, Paddy Shannon & John Fitzpatrick. 10.12am - Paddy Hayles, Tony Harford, John Roche & Larry Shannon. 11.16am - John Joe Murray, John Watson, George Peters & Tom O’Neill. 12.44pm - Sean Ryan, Frank Boyle, Jim Ryan & Aidan O’Connor. 2.52pm - Michael Brennan, Willie Byrne A.N. Other & A.N. Other.
