TENNIS met its match in the fashion stakes as players turned in their green finery for the Shamrock Tournament at Archersfield on Saturday.
The theme was green and the costumes didn’t disappoint. Liam O’Connor’s green, white and orange wig was a great eye-catcher while Eadaoin Power’s outfit was fit for the catwalk in Milan, such was the level of co-ordination involved.
The tennis was also impressive, with four excellent sections helping to serve up a great night on the club courts. In section one winners Ivan Morrissey and Christina Heffernan had to dig deep to secure their first place, pipping Rory McGovern and Tina O’Connor to the spoils by just a single point.
The matches in section two matches produced more entertainment. The winners here were Darren Brennan and Dor Keane, who also had just one point to spare over the runners-up John Keane and Nora Darcy.
Section three winners John Greene and Mary McGovern played some excellent tennis together. They were closely followed by the runners up, Eadaoin Power and Robbie Heffernan.
Section four was another closely fought contest. Winners here were Colin Feeley and Pauline Carroll, with Padraig Moore and Jackie Feeley as the runners-up.
Thanks went to Brian Doyle and Jimmy Morrow for organising another excellent night’s tennis, which was followed by great food and craic.
The regular American tournament will be held at the club this Friday. Players are asked to get their names in as early as possible.
The Hardcourt Singles League will begin on Monday, March 25. A fully graded competition, entries will be accepted until tonight (Wednesday). Names can be left at the club bar or players can enter by texting 086-8645165.
