The following are the notes from Gowran Park, Castlecomer, Callan, Mountain View and New Ross golf clubs this week:
Golfers from neighbouring clubs turned out in force for Sunday’s open fourball competition at Gowran Park GC.
Rathdowney members Alan Phelan (2) and John Gleeson (10) took first prize with a great score of 48pts, which included a front nine of 25pts and six birdies, with three more birdies on the back nine. Local members Paddy McGuinness (10) and Alex Dunne (14) were runners-up on 47pts with Kevin Maher (18) and Pat Comerford (10, Castlecomer) third on 45pts. Fourth place went to Abbeyleix duo Ray Casey and Declan Devoy.
The last remaining Open Fourball of the season will be held on Sunday, November 10. With shorter days, early booking is advisable.
AUTUMN - Leading qualifier from the opening round of the Open Autumn League was John Hoyne, who continued his good form of late and scored 38pts. Declan Davis and Alex Dunne also secured spots in the final.
The competition continues every Thursday and Friday until early December, with the final to be held on December 13. Timesheet is available from 056-7726699.
SENIORS - John Geoghegan (18, Kilkenny GC) took the honours in the penultimate seniors open singles, finishing first with 41pts. New Ross member Frank Moriarty (20, New Ross) was runner-up with 35pts.
CLUB WEEK - Club Promotion Week will be held from October 23 to October 28. There will be a four-person team event, with prizes of outings for winners. All participants will be entered into a draw for one free membership for 2014.
Entry fee is €60 per team Wednesday/Thursday/Friday and €80 per team on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. Bookings from 056-7726699.
WINTER LEAGUE - The Members’ Winter League begins on Sunday. The competition will be an 11-hole singles stableford. The league will run until December, culminating with a Christmas party and prize-giving ceremony on Sunday, December 14.
LADIES - Ann Mullins was crowned the Lady Golfer of the Year for 2013. In a very close finish, Ann won the title by one point, finishing ahead of Margaret Bower.

Victor Smyth and Ken Hovendon travelled to the home of golf at St Andrews, Scotland during the week to play in the national final of the Holmpatrick Cup.
The final was played over two days on the old and new courses at St Andrews. Victor and Ken, who qualified as Leinster champions, scored 39pts on the new course and 42pts on the old course to finish in second place, losing out on first place by one point overall.
LADIES - Winner of the Tuesday morning social golf, which was run on a league basis, was Margaret O’Keeffe. She was presented with her prize on Sunday.
The Turkey competitions have now started at the club. The singles final will be played this month, with Caroline Conway and Joan Brennan as finalists.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club lotto. Numbers drawn were 1, 11, 16, 17. The jackpot remains at €20,000.

More than 70 teams played in the Mount Carmel Classic at Callan GC.
Rita O’Neill, Teresa O’Neill, Helena McCormack and Breda Walsh took the top award with 103pts. John Holden, Kevin O’Gorman, Dinny Murphy and Blase O’Gorman played superbly to take second prize while Fr Pat Duggan, Liam Duggan, Paddy Landers and Frank Murphy were third. Fourth came Michael Somers, Don Bolger, John Butler and John Kirwan. Thanks went to the organisers, sponsors, the club for the use of the course and all who participated.
SINGLES - The final of the O’Dwyer singles series will be held this weekend. John Brunnock was the latest weekly winner to qualify with 38pts, with Nigel Dagg second and James Walsh third. The gross prize was won by Brian Doheny while J.J. Murphy scored a hole in one on the eighth hole to finish the final qualifier in style.
More than 80 golfers have made it through the final. All will be contacted by the club with details of the timesheet for Saturday’s playoff.
FUND-RAISER - There will be a team event on the October Bank Holiday weekend, with all proceeds going towards the refurbishment of the clubhouse bar. The competition, open to ladies and gents teams (any combination) runs from October 25 to 27.

The second round of the Winter League will be held at Mountain View GC over the weekend.
Sunday’s competition is a single stableford. The remaining four rounds of the Winter League will be played on the four weekends in November.
SCRAMBLE - The Christmas three-person scramble will be held on Sunday, December 1. This event is open to all club members. After the golf there will be seasonal refreshments, followed by the presentation of prizes to all monthly medal winners, club singles winner/runner up, club doubles winners/runners up, golfer of the year, champions cup winner and the Winter league top three.

The weather was cooler, but still some 130 golfers played in the club singles competition at New Ross GC on Sunday.
Brendan Duffin (9), who has featured in the prizes on a number of occasions, continued that great form by returning 40pts to win the club singles. Joe Morrissey (17) was runner-up two points behind, beating Ted Harrington (12) on countback. Junior Cashin won the gross with 30pts, while category winners were Pat Culleton (9), John McLoughlin (12) and Willie Wallace (15).
SCRAMBLE - Brothers Tommy, Frankie and Nigel Morrissey teamed up to win the three-person scramble, beating Daithi, Philip and Willie Murphy to the spoils. Declan Breen, Paul Goff and Mossy Connell were third.
SINGLES - The open monthly singles competition will be held tomorrow (Thursday), with prizes for the various age categories (under 50s, 50 to 65 and over 65s). Tee times are available online.
There will also be an 18 hole singles stableford at the club on Sunday. Some Saturday afternoon tee times are available.
Brian St Ledger has advanced to the Singles Matchplay final. He will play the winner of the Eamon Delaney/Robert O’Dwyer semi-final.
FINALS - The New Ross 3Ts team are participating in the national finals at the K Club this week. New Ross qualified for the finals at Dundrum last month, with the K Club winners earning a trip to Spain.
LADIES - The ladies competed for the Katie Bailey Perpetual Trophy on Wednesday. Winner was Mary O’Leary (37pts), with Pat Purcell (36pts) second. The gross winner was Mary Kavanagh (22 gross pts) with Margaret Murphy third (36pts).
With Winter time approaching quickly, the 14-hole competitions will start from today (Wednesday). The morning times will remain the same, with a draw at 1 to 1.30pm and timesheet from 2 to 3pm.
The Open Charity Waltz competition in aid of the Community Workshop was very well supported. Ladies winners were Liz Bennett, Gemma Butler (Birr), Marie Conlon (The Heath).
