THE YOUNG golfers from Gowran Park GC turned out in great numbers for the Captain’s Prize to juniors on Sunday. The first year that both the boys and girls competed against each other for the major prize the competition produced a worthy winner when Emma Comerford recorded a tremendous score of 62 nett to claim first prize. In second place was Matt Kenny having his best round of the year with a nett 68. Danny Monks recorded a nett 69 for third place, while Niall Treacy took the gross prize with a score of 83.
The front nine prize was won by Sean Carey with a nett 32.5, with Judy Dick taking the back nine prize with a nett 30.5.
In the beginners section Rachel Dick had her first ever win when she recorded 16 points for the nine holes, while the in-form Joe Murphy took second prize with 12 points.
The Captain’s Prize was the last of 12 competitions in which points were awarded towards the Golfer of the Year prize. In the boys’ section Kevin Maher emerged a very popular winner with 41 points, having scored in nine of the 12 qualifying competitions to see off the challenge of Danny Monks, who finished on 38 points.
In the girls’ section Emma Comerford’s win in the Captain’s Prize gave her a winning total of 35 points. That was enough to overtake long-time leader Shauna Scannell, who finished second on 26 points.
SCRATCH CUPS - The Senior and Junior Scratch Cups were played recently in Gowran Park, with the course in fine condition after the President’s Prize.
Alan Thomas (Tramore) shot a gross 70 to win the Senior Scratch Cup, with Thurles member Kieran Kennedy taking the runners-up spot with gross 71. John O’Donnell (Co Tipperary) took the nett prize with a score of 71 points.
The Junior Cup competition (handicaps 5 to 9) saw club member Enda Cleere, playing off six, win with a gross score of 75. Second place on the day went to Mark Goodison (Wexford) playing off five, losing out on the countback.
Third place went to Rosslare member Rory Deane (5) with a gross score of 76, while Gowran Park member Liam O’Grady took the nett prize with a score of 68 points.
SINGLES - The club weekly open singles competition continues on Thursdays throughout September. Last Thursday saw club members Dylan Vaughan and Michael Walsh scoring 41 points, with Dylan coming out on top on the countback.
RESULTS - Results, men’s weekly singles competition: 1 Mark Whelan (13), 44pts; 2 Lee Graham (10), 44pts (c/b); 3 Morgan Farrell (18), 42pts.
Results, ladies weekly 18 hole stableford: 1 Kathleen Whitehead (26), 39pts.
